The Government We Deserve

Cook County voters put on a lame pantomime of Democracy Tuesday. Despite howls of pain against the incumbent mess in Springfield and at the County, voters turned up to support the very people that have brought the county and state to its miserable condition in record numbers.

Frank Avila is the incumbent chair of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, one of the least accountable boards in the State. Northfield elementary school children who need to cross Willow to get to school now will get a tunnel; let’s hope there won’t be any undesirable pols skulking in the gloom down there.

Such a ruckus that statement has caused. A recently passed law, enacted over Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s veto, has propelled school prayer back into the headlines by requiring every school in the state to start the day with a moment of silence. If children choose, it can be used for silent prayer.

One would think that asking children to be quiet for a few seconds or minutes to reflect on whatever they want would be a good thing. Reflection doesn’t seem to be the long suit of today’s stretched-tight generations. Teachers also ... Read More...
