The Government We Deserve

Cook County voters put on a lame pantomime of Democracy Tuesday. Despite howls of pain against the incumbent mess in Springfield and at the County, voters turned up to support the very people that have brought the county and state to its miserable condition in record numbers.

Frank Avila is the incumbent chair of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, one of the least accountable boards in the State. The $1.4 Billion budget MWRD notoriously (at least notorious to Chicago Daily Observer readers) poured billions of gallons of raw sewage into Lake Michigan in September, after flooding basements in Cook County in records numbers (again with raw sewage). No matter, the Tribune and SunTimes blindly endorsed Avila and he was the leading vote-getter for the Board, with more than triple the number of votes of any of his opponents, with all three incumbents returned to the MWRD Board.

Schoenberg Shows His Dem Clout in Northfield Dispute

Well isn’t it nice for his constituents to see the REAL Jeff Schoenberg in action? Now that his Democrat cronies have all the power in Springfield, State Senator Jeffie (9th,D) doesn’t have any need to coddle his State Senate district with crumbs of representation – this week he stomped on a compromise that Northfield Village President John Birkenbine has been negotiating for several years and slammed a couple of extra lanes (with a cost of $4 million to state taxpayers) along Willow Road. So much for the hard work of one of the few remaining politicians with integrity (Birkinbine, that is). Northfield elementary school children who need to cross Willow to get to school now will get a tunnel; let’s hope there won’t be any undesirable pols skulking in the gloom down there.
