A source with close ties to Chicago's public education establishment has confirmed that Rahm Emanuel may close 100 Chicago public schools. Along with the closures will come a vast expansion of charter schools. Emanuel has 150 half empty public schools that are a drain on tax dollars. With Chicago, having lost 200,000 people in the last Census: change is in the air. The only question now is will Rahm make the announcement Tuesday or Wednesday in San Francisco, or in the coming weeks? Can Rahm go to war with the teachers unions and win? Stay tuned....UPDATE- Rahm will not make the big announcement in San Francisco.

This is a pretty powerful statement. Has there been any more information or followup on this story? 100 school is about 1/4 of our present schools.

    Thanks

Rahm said he wanted a war during his election campaign, and declared it by taking our raise, then trying to bust the union on the school day, and now:

    eliminating tenure
    paying no raise
getting rid of pay increases for masters degrees and additional education
going to pay based on test scores

The last one will drive teachers away from the schools with high poverty student bodies. When your pay is based on average test scores, why would you want to teach students who will almost certainly score below average?

Rahm’s rhetoric and policies are driving teachers out of the schools — which he’s happy with, since he can replace dedicated veterans with cheaper and more pliant younger teachers, in hope of eliminating the union — the only roadblock to full privatization and the dismantling of public education in Chicago.

He wants a war; we plan to give him one.

It is official, Chicago has become a third world city, with a tin plated dictator with delusions of godliness.

Its sad to see whats happening to public schools . Here’s my experience . My son started at public schools 3 1/2 years ago . First there was a testing process to determine if your kid can qualify for one the elite schools they offer . After that you apply for the school of your choice .The school puts your kid in a slot . My son did qualify for such a school but there is nothing elite about it . The first 2 years under the present principal at the time was what I expected . Experience teachers good communication with parents . Concerned teachers and providing a safe environment for our children . Next 2 years principal was let go . Inexperienced teachers brought in . No concern for kids . Teachers teaching kids based on how to pass state required test . Which will determine if she will keep her job . No communication with parents . Reduction of useful classes like key board , computer ,writing , math etc . Its all about the test and the teacher trying to keep her job . This is happening at a so called elite school . Last 2 years have been terrible . Unfortunately I can’t pull my son out I’m not working right now . Longer school day is a joke . For a longer day my son gets a recess that is 45 mins and a 15 min increase in lunch . How constructive is that . His school did not have recess so there isn’t any recess area at his school . Where they go I don’t know . Most of the experience teachers have left things are getting worse .

Hello IT IS TRULY SAD TO SEE ALL OF OUR TEACHERS ON STRIKE.. I KNOW ALOT OR ALMOST ALL DO CARE ABOUT OUR CHILDREN AND THAT’S PART OF WHAT MAKES A GREAT TEACHER.. I DO UNDERSTAND OUR TEACHERS WANT CHANGE . THEY ARE SPEAKING FOR US. I YANKED MY 3RD GRADER OUT OF SCHOOL. ONE DAY COULDN’T STAND HER BEING BULLIED NO PROTECTION NURSE WAS IN EVERY TWO WEEKS.. WHAT MADE ME MAD WAS SEEING A VICE PRINCIPLE IN THE SCHOOL HALL WITH 7 and 8 th GRADERS ACTING A FOOL. I MEAN THERE IS A STANDARD OR PROFFESIONALISM WHEN DEALIN WITH THIS VICE PRINCIPLE .. SOME STAFF TRY TO BE COOL WITH THE STUDENTS YOU KNOW WHAT IT’S THE SAME THING I TELL MY DAUGHTER IM YOU’RE MOM NOT YOUR FRIEND.. IM YOUR PRINCIPLE NOT YOUR FRIEND.

So, what happens when all the schools in Chicago are charter schools? You’re back to neighborhood schools. Either that, or you are putting your lowest students in the schools they will have set aside for the misfits…Lovely, Rahm. This is another clear example of how our Mayor does not care about the children. The fact of the matter is teachers are no longer teaching Opey Taylor or Ritchie Cunningham anymore. These kids are tough, and they are coming from even tougher homes. But nobody cares to talk about that. Heaven forbid you have your constituents face reality that their parenting skills are lacking at best. There are teachers who should not be in the classroom, this I agree with. However, you have lousy people in every profession. The crime rate is up in Chicago. Should we start firing cops and bringing in “charter” cops? This is ridiculous! We have great teachers in Chicago, many of whom work in high LEP, gang infested, and economically deprived communities. Wake up America!!! Schools in this country are only going to get worse until someone with a backbone in Washington starts holding these parents accountable too!
