Questions about Rep. Lang’s medical pot legalization bill
While social conservatives continue to be scolded about persistently addressing social issues, the liberals are making way on their social agenda. Another step down Illinois' slippery slope is expected this week.
A vote on State Rep. Lou Lang's (D-Chicago) medical pot bill is expected Tuesday in the Illinois House. T The Daily Northwestern -- Northwestern University's campus paper -- reports after talking to their local State Senator Jeff Schoenberg (D-Evanston) about the new provisions. Schoenberg, who was a strong advocate of banning public tobacco smoking explains why Lang's legalization of medicinal cannabis is acceptable:
"You have to have a doctor's recommendation, and you have to have a bona fide relationship with this doctor," state Sen. Jeff Schoenberg (D-Evanston) said. "You have to take your medical records to the Department of Public Health that will scrutinize them before they give you the license."
And despite the fact the federal government has not legalized marijuana use, Illinois would become the 17th state and DC itself ignores the federal law.We have a couple of questions about Rep. Lang's intentions for legalizing pot in Illinois:
•Will medical pot smokers be allowed to take their medicine in public facilities, or will they need to stand 15 feet outside the doors as tobacco consumers are required to do?
•Will legalized medical pot be allowed inside junior high, high schools or college dorms?
•Will Illinois lawmakers authorize local law officials to ignore federal law concerning medical cannabis?
We look forward to hearing some of those questions asked and answered during the House floor debate this week.
