Campaign Smears Go Beyond the Pale as Obama allies target Palin Family

It is beginning to get ugly.

The hysterical and sexist attacks are mounting as Sarah Palin and her family are being maligned.

Did you know that her husband, Todd Palin, once ran a stop sign and was ticketed? Imagine that! Additionally, he was cited on another occasion for operating a vehicle on public property that was set aside as a wildlife refuge.

That type of occurrence is routine in Alaska where paved roads are few and far between and the frontier is not always well marked. What is even more damning is the fact that he was given a DUI ticket a quarter of a century ago. Todd Palin was twenty years old at the time.

How low can the smear tactics go? Will we next learn that a member of the Palin family has had to pay library fines on overdue books? Not any books, mind you, but inflammatory racist tracts that have been banned by many library and school districts like Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

The Democrats had no problem with nominating a presidential candidate whose sole military experience was acting as the Commander in Chief of the Arkansas National Guard in 1992, but someone who heads the Alaska National Guard is now deemed unqualified 2008 for lacking military experience? Give me a break!

Clearly, the lunatic fringe attacks upon Palin’s daughter, Bristol, are beyond the pale. After circulating such gutter level rumors for several days over the long Labor Day weekend,

Commissar Barack Obama called for a cease fire. Amazingly enough, as soon as the Democratic nominee spoke the posts generated at Obama friendly blogs suddenly disappeared down the memory hole.
Unfortunately, the bloggers at Little Green Footballs caught on to what sites were attempting to smear Palin and publicized their findings.

Of course, the Obama campaign has denied all responsibility for the rumor mongering and character attacks upon the Palins. As a Chicagoan, I am skeptical of this disclaimer.

Obama’s campaign impresario is David Axelrod. He formerly worked as a political journalist for The Chicago Tribune before turning his talents to political consulting work. In the past, Axelrod has had to issue various denials for engaging in forms of political chicanery and subterfuge. In advance of the 2004 Democratic primary, Axelrod interviewed Blair Hull as a prospective client.

He questioned Hull about an order of protection contained in his divorce file. Hull’s refusal to discuss the matter at length caused Axelrod to reconsider his employment options and he hooked up with Obama for the Senate race.

Blair Hull was a wealthy, self-funded candidate. He had been a major contributor to various Democratic candidates. According to the Illinois State Board of Elections, Hull contributed or loaned hundreds of thousands of dollars to candidates, most notably campaign committees supporting Governor Rod
Blagojevich. The “pay to play” Illinois chief executive, Blagojevich managed to
reciprocate Hull’s favor by appointing Brenda Sexton, Hull’s ex-wife, to a plum position as the head of the Illinois Film Office in 2003 shortly after he was sworn in as governor. The appointment was widely criticized as Sexton had no prior film production experience and had previously worked in commercial real estate (Sexton eventually resigned her position in 2007 and announced that she was going to try to find work in Hollywood).

In a multi-candidate field, Blair Hull seemed to be cruising towards the nomination when the contents of his sealed divorce file became publicized. His former wife repaid Hull by joining in the chorus of criticism in the press. Hull quickly fell out of contention as Axelrod’s candidate, Barack Obama, secured the nomination by virtue of monolithic support from African American voters as he bested six other candidates.

Obama’s candidacy was helped by the decision of Illinois Comptroller Daniel Hynes not to wage a negative campaign relying upon opposition research discoveries that linked Illinois State Senator Obama to controversial and radical
figures that have become household names during the current campaign. When the
damage was done, Axelrod denied leaking the order of protection to his former newspaper colleagues.

Within a short space of time, history repeated itself and events broke in Obama’s favor once again.

On July 29, 2004, the Republic Senatorial nominee, Jack Ryan, withdrew from the general election. One week earlier, The Chicago Tribune successfully petitioned a California court to open his sealed divorce file over the objections of both Ryan and his former wife, Jeri Ryan, a television actress. The Obama camp denied responsibility for tipping the newspaper as to the contents of the file.

The bipartisan Republic State Party Chairman, Judy Baar Topinka, was accused of sabotaging the renomination of the incumbent GOP Senator Peter Fitzgerald before the primary by declining to endorse him for re-election.

After Fitzgerald opted not to file for re-election, Topinka left Jack Ryan to twist in the wind until his withdrawal and blocked the appointment of Jim Oberweis to fill the vacant ballot position. Although Oberweis had finished second in the primary and had the ability to finance his own campaign, Topinka and her allies ignored his offer to succeed the disgraced Ryan on the ballot and chose instead to invite the perennial candidate and political gadfly Alan Keyes to move to Illinois and face Obama in the November election. Talk about being given a “gimmee putt.” Nevertheless, rumors were circulated about the sexual orientation of the daughter of Keyes in order to further embarrass the social conservative.

What is past is prologue. All of these shenanigans seem familiar to
Chicagoans. Despite his eloquent rhetoric, Obama has always specialized in a vicious type of go for your opponent’s jugular politics since he objected to the nomination papers of all of his opponents to clear the primary ballot for himself in his first race for the Illinois Senate (a fact that he deliberately omitted from his autobiographical books). Go ask Alice, I think she knows. That is a reference to former Illinois State Senator Alice Palmer, a one time Obama ally, who was knifed by her ambitious political protégé.

One has to ask why the Obama campaign is panicking and resorting to using its friends on the left to libel Alaska Governor Sarah Palin? First of all, the Democrats seemed completely caught off guard by Senator McCain’s selection of Palin as his running mate. Secondly, Palin has proven to be immediately popular with the Republican base. She has solid conservative and reform credentials. Her true personal story is as compelling as the fable crafted and mass
manufactured to sell Obama.

Given the circumstances of his own birth, Obama and his supporters have looked hypocritical in attempting to attack Palin’s daughter, Bristol, for her pregnancy. The seventeen year old is planning to marry the father of her unborn child. It should be recalled that Stanley Ann Dunham was eighteen when her son, Barack Hussein Obama, was born. Accounts vary, but it seems definite that Obama was conceived out of wedlock and his parents’ marriage may well have been invalid due to his biological father’s bigamy. Was Obama’s mother a neglectful parent for sending her son to live with his maternal grandparents while she roamed the world at will pursuing her doctoral degree? Sexist critics
have opined that Sarah Palin ought not serve as vice president on account her children, including an infant son with special needs. What a double standard!

There is good reason for the Obama campaign to be scared. The election is shaping up as a marathon, not the victory lap that the Democrats expected.

Attacking Palin may prove to be a costly error of judgment on the part of anyonesupporting Obama’s candidacy.

Dan, I do not believe that any of the Media skirt twisting and 'Hush My Beaks!' will matter a jot. The Obama crowd is nothing if not loud and empty.

Yesterday:

Obama Stayed Home Here
in Chicago, holed up with the Progressive Geniuses that will waste more money than the GNP of most Nations on Earth losing this Campaign.

Obama is too arrogant - to far gone with the flattery - to understand, let alone get a hint, of the tidal wave sweeping over his Campaign.
The Palin dynamic has changed everything - the more his surrogates and Media Mopes call for intense vetting on Palin ( keeps a messy purse, never clips coupons neatly, eschews emery boards, & other ground breaking reportage)the more Billy Ayers, Crazy Uncle Jere, the Brother in the Packing Crate in Kenya, Annenberg Challenge, Gameliel Foundation( I really wish someone would look into this outfit) and reckless youthful cocaine experimentations will pop up like teenage acne on Obama's complexion.

Nope - Race Warfare is the Card of Hope. McCain/Palin = KKK USA & etc.

The Race Card is next gambit and will be the only one played until the Election. Dave Axelrod seems to be in constant communication with Billy Ayers and the Race Card is the only avenue that Axelrod seems to win at - Race/Class war is going to be threatend.

The Media will play along as they always do - there is too much money invested in Obama toomany magazines at stake. Too many Woods Funds and other radical money laundering operqations.

McCain has them on the ropes. Local Democrats are talking - to their neighbors - never to the media.

The Hyde Park Mafia is worried.

All those Media wheezers with their panties in a twist over the Vetting Process might - might mind you which means it will not happen - want to thumb back a few pages and re-visit the Rantings of the Man Who Baptized Obama - Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Joe Lieberman gave a great pitch to my fellow Democrats. Vote Country - Vote McCain/Palin!

I am rather liking the fact that Sarah is under attack. THe things they are throwing at her are bouncing right back and smacking the O-ring campaigners in the ...well you know.

Anyway, let's see what the trouble is with the Palins.

1. Papa has a 25 year old DUI. Wow, you know anyone else that got one of those or done anything like that? Cruicify him I say!
2. Papa drove on Park land! This man is obviously not fit to be the owner of a car. 2 strikes. Again Cruicify Hime.
3. The daughter has had relations at the age of 17 and as a result has become heavy with child. Get out the rocks and stone her I say!
4. Sarah has a baby of her own that has special needs. How could she possibly be President? Someone pull her shoes off and lock her and the child in the kitchen!

Really, I think all the only clissification for the baggage the Palin's are carrying is by USA standards: Normal. Theya re just like us. a few bumps in the road and when they have hit those bumps they recover and carry on in the right fashion.

Finn Kacy says:

At first I was surprised on her selection. I figured I better find out more about her record before the media would attempt to alter reality. What I found was a strong, educated , dedicated hard working woman with the ability to manage both a career and home. Does her family have issues, yes, but so do "real" families all over the United States. Somehow she has been able to handle these problems, take on her own party in her state, and serve the citizens of her state well.

She is so much more than the typical professional politicians that we have to choose from. It is exactly what she brings to the table that has the media and Washington beltway elite and west coast liberals so scared. She really does bring change and hope.

Will there be some skeletons in her closet, most likely yes, but if the media had true unbiased positions they would feed on all the candidates equally exposing them for what they really are.

Deanna Kilgore says:

I am insulted by the fluffy reporting of Palin's family; however I am equally insulted by the right-wing's attempts to gloss over the fact that she appears to be partisan extremist.

The following excerpt is from http://www.time.com/time/politics/art...

"Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor."

Incidents like this, Troopergate, and her possible AIP involvement are REAL issues that call into question her ideology and the way she wields power. Unfortunately facts are being drowned out by noise from the right and left.

I initially had hope for McCain. But after weighing the alternatives I have now made the logical decision to vote Obama/Biden with the hope that they will dismantle the corporate oligarchy and restore the Constitution to its rightful place!

He's still working for Cynthia McKinney I believe. Lovely chap. Did a bang-up job in the 19th Ward a while back.

Smear campaigns are common and predictable by both sides. People with political agendas are going to play that "My daddy can lick your little brother" game and compare one person's strengths against another's weaknesses and not tell the whole story. These attacks on Palin shouldn't surprise anyone. They may not all be true or even half true.

Negative campaigning works because there are enough gullible voters out there that will believe anything.

There is a small difference in how I decide my vote in terms of something they do and represent vs something their parent did or represented.

Let's all look at the candidates, how they perform in life and as "deciders".

And Dan, if smearing is bad, please self-regulate.

I have worked for Democratic candidates for 50 years. I stopped today. Barack Obama was ten feet from my office, gave a speech in our campus gym, but not a single faculty member nor student--so far as I can determine--was informed of his appearance. We just had to park in the cornfield, walk a half mile out of our way to get anywhere and be told simply that there was an "event." Well, my "event" is to stop supporting such an arrogant crew.

Molly Timmins says:

I'm not seeing anyone but Web-based conspiracy nuts "beating up" on Palin. Reporting on her -- on her family (which she has put in play); on her policies, on her legal wranglings -- is fair and balanced journalism. But the "Obama camp" isn't doing it. Journalists are.

As for the "campus gym" story: That doesn't sound like an Obama campaign tactic, frankly. When they were here in Iowa, they made sure they got every one of us out of our offices; they even lured us with food. I didn't get to meet him, but I would have had the chance if I would've got on it earlier.

Arrogant or not, they just don't come to towns and not try to get people together. How do you think they get all those huge crowds?

So it really doesn't make sense.

tecumseh says:

The point isn't Palin's family troubles; you're right, they are normal.

The point is that she and other right-wingers have made a career and a culture war out of telling the rest of us how to live our lives, and admonishing us against teen sex, out of wedlock sex, and putting career before family. Now it turns out, Palin's family has all the problems she judges others for.

Palin wants to brag about her "choice" to keep her child, but would deny others the same choice. She wants privacy for her daughter but won't give all Americans the same privacy in our homes and bedrooms and doctors' offices. She is a hypocrite, period, and that ought to be pointed out every day between now and November.

Artgal says:

Palin has not at all used her positions of power as mayor or governor to impose her faith. She never banned books and the Time article referenced above has been totally debunked. And abortion has to have either a 2/3 congressional vote to overturn or be brought up before the Supreme Court. The 'worst' that would happen if the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade is that the states would get to vote on it - as it should have been done in 1973 as the legislative process was ignored in place of judicial activism.

That said, consider this: Obama wants to impose his 'faith' upon you! He warned us this summer that we cannot just go around heating or cooling our homes at will, driving what we want or eating whatever we want because somebody overseas might not like it! And who is going to monitor our activities, Mr. Messiah? The government you wish to expand?

People, wake up! As someone who lived in Chicago when the Ryan 'controversy' was unleashed and who has heard Obama say over and over through the years how such mudslinging needs to stop, believe that he is the ultimate smear merchant! Is it just by coincidence that every single person who goes against him is put through a personal hell unlike any other? It's Chicago politics through and through - this time, on the national stage.

I hope Barack Obama's ego becomes thoroughly deflated this November. He is not worthy of leading as he has NEVER done anything in his entire pathetic life that qualifies him to hold the keys of this precious nation. As an Economics teacher, his tax proposals and programs are the death to America as we know it. I am not at all happy with Bush's lack of fiscal restraint and bail-outs, but with Obama's plan - you have not seen anything more devastating to our economic future.

Though McCain may not be perfect, he is perfect for these times and for cleaning out the corruption of Washington DC. He proved his committment to stopping the spending spree of Bush when he selected Palin, a woman who has done an incredible job in Alaska by cutting property taxes 60%, putting party affiliation aside to destroy the corruption of some in her own party, cutting energy costs, making executive decisions daily and leading the National Guard - including sending guard into Louisiana nearly 2 weeks ago in preparation for Gustav. Don't tell me this woman cannot lead!

BTW: to those who say on this post that Palin 'bragged' about her choice to keep her child: what interview was that where she 'bragged'? How has she made a career of telling you how to live your life? How has she impacted you on those levels? Please provide solid proof.

I'm a lesbian prolife feminist, an educator and filmmaker who is proud to be supporting the McCain/Palin ticket. Chew on that for a while.
