Lord Conrad Black: Chicago’s Torquemada claims another victim
Innocence no longer has much to do with U.S. justice. The plea bargain and denunciation system enables the prosecutocracy to extort or suborn whatever perjury it needs to satisfy impressionable jurors relying on their recollections of often complicated testimony. Procedure and evidentiary rules are a stacked deck; and the judges are usually ex-prosecutors whose leanings are obvious. The Fifth, Sixth and Eighth Amendment guarantees of due process, and other criteria of the rule of law, are treated as sentimental cant from century-old civics classes. A fear-mongering media and a massive prison industry endlessly demand more prisoners and longer sentences in a country that already has eight to 12 times as many incarcerated people per capita as other advanced countries, such as Canada.
Just sour grapes and spite from one of the crooks that Mr. Fitzgerald helped put behind bars. Also a stupid comparison from someone who rather fancies himself as a historian. Torquemada PERSECUTED alleged heretics, Mr. Fitzgerald PROSECUTES criminals.
The jury found Black guilty, an appellate court agreed and the Chimp in the White House doesn\’t want to know – so no pardon.

What a hoot! The Bureau of Prisons gives Conrad Black full access to the Internet, email, and the news media.
Instead of doing useful work, the jailer lets Black spend his day trashing the people who did their duty by putting him in jail as well as the U.S. system of justice.
He’s a thief with a big mouth who is now omnipresent online.
I have no brief for Black, but everything he said here is absolutely true, as someone who has been studying comparative justice systems. America’s boast of great ‘freedom’ is a sham. It is the most legalistic developed country on earth. America jails more people per capita, and more kids under 18 than any other democracy. In the U.S. you are more likely to get sued or jailed for a small offence than anywhere else in the world.
Lindsay George Gray, I hear you. However, Black never found any fault whatsoever with the USA. In fact, he could see nothing good about his native Canada and even went so far as to argue it should be absorbed into its big neighbor. Maybe he’ll change his mind now that his own dog has sunk its fangs deep into his neocon ass.
If Patrick Fitzgerald actually is Torquemada, we would have been treated to the sight of his lordness being dragged to an auto da fé, which he so richly deserved.
