A group of US and Chinese business people on Wednesday unveiled the first US financial services firm to be co-owned by Chinese interests.
HuaMei Capital Company, as the joint venture firm is known, will be based in Chicago and Beijing, highlighting the growing links between Chinese business and the US Midwest.
It will offer risk management and private equity investment services for US and other investors, as well as for “the growing number of Chinese firms with authority to invest offshore”, its founders said.

There is that fine line between engaging China in capitalism, and encouraging a very bad civil rights player. I am in favor of having 1000 different methods of interaction with China (and other Newly Industrialized Countries..does anyone say that anymore?), and am encouraged at having the steady hand of one of the greatest political/business families in American History, The Stevensons, involved to the n-th degree.
Per conversations with the Senator, Stevenson has personally been involved in this deal. I am interested to see what comes out of it.

Bill Baar says:
Bob Geldof on China's influence in the world today,http://www.mg.co.za/articlepage.aspx?area=/breaking_news/breaking_news__africa&articleid=268984
The Irish rock star, nominated for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for organising last year's Live 8 benefit concerts, said China was protecting the Sudanese government because it provides 6% of China's oil.
"I was in Darfur 20 years ago and people were killing each other then. It's an ancient battle between nomadic people and settled people, between Arab Africans and black Africans, between Islam and Christians ... The reason why it has not been resolved is because of China," Geldof said.
"The Chinese protect the Khartoum government, who are killers, and they will not allow a vote in the Security Council ... so 250 000 people die in Darfur," he said.
Baar gain: And then we have China's hand in Burman today too. I'm for strengthening global ties but China will need to be confronted one way or the other, sooner or later, because the Rock Star has it right.
