Hello Kettle? It’s the Pot Calling. Rep. Schakowsky Skips Her Own Family History

Rep Jan Schakowsky advising Scott Lee Cohen on the mud slung in politics?
Geez, of all people to advise Cohen to step aside because of the mud slung in politics. Schakowsky’s husband Bob Creamer did some hard-time down at Terre Haute for a check kiting scheme and the two of them still walk tall. If Schakowsky’s calling shots here, Cohen oughtta stay. Who’s Schakosky and Creamer to talk.

Bob Creamer is a good friend of mine. In the last election we disagreed on Governor and U.S. Senator. He won both. We agreed on County Board. But despite our disagreements our own friendship is not based on third parties. And we both support his wife, although she is further to the left than I, as is he.

But to compare him to Scott Lee Cohen is not fair or accurate. First of all, his so called check kiting scheme resulted in no loss of money to anyone. It was akin to the joke: Why can’t I pay my Visa bill with my American Express card?

Scott Lee Cohen was arrested (but not convicted for a physical act of violence). Creamer is calm, cool and collected, and wouldn’t hurt anyone physically. Frankly, when he was indicted for his technical violation I urged him to accept a plea bargain because the cost of his defense, unfortunately, would have been prohibitive, and the time he would spend in a penal institution might actually be healthful for him vis a vis diet, exercise, etc.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again. One of the reasons I admire Jan and Bob is because they are each other’s best friend and literally stand by each other. And I admire the voters of her district who aren’t sitting in false judgment.

While I don’t agree with him on many occasions there is no doubt that Bob is the best organizer since Saul Alinsky and fortunately both would take it as a compliment. Most people don’t know that Alinsky’s most effective organizing was with the Roman Catholic Church.

Just a few weeks ago I had breakfast with Jan and Bob and then we went on a field trip together. The last time we did that was a trip to the Illinois State Fair. I definitely know more breeds of cattle and sheep than they do, but then I think there may be only one farm in her district.

Plus I am more clever and was able to get a good parking spot, only because of my fluency in Russian.

Robert Creamer was convicted. Per USA Today 8/31/2005

The indictment alleged Creamer caused a series of insufficiently funded checks and wire transfers to be drawn on accounts he controlled as executive director of the Illinois Public Action Fund. According to the indictment, he allegedly then used the inflated balances to pay the group’s expenses and own salary.”

“Creamer pleaded guilty to one count each of bank fraud and failure to collect withholding tax. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped several other counts.”

Scott Lee Cohen’s never convicted of a thing and was upfront about the allegation.

There’s a difference there. Mayor Daley got it right, So anybody who’s allegedly — who’s arrested and the case is thrown out, should not run for public office. Is that right?

Cohen probably did what’s best for Illinois. He may be a more honorable guy than folks are making him out to be for having done so.

    Phil,

I always like the explanation that there was no “loss of money to anyone” in Creamer’s fraud. It is like justifying shooting a bullet at your neighbor because you are not a good shot and will probably miss.
