What Teacher’s Strike? Chicago Leo is Going Great

John Kass 12 September 2012 7 Comments

When Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis led her members out on strike this week, she said real school would be closed.

“Negotiations have been intense but productive,” she said. “However, we have failed to reach an agreement that will prevent a labor strike. Real school will not be open (Monday).”

Real school? You mean that public system where four of 10 students don’t graduate?

Since real school wasn’t open, I was compelled to visit an unreal school.

A South Side school where 100 percent of the students graduate, and 100 percent are accepted to college. A Roman Catholic all-boys school that draws from poor and working-class neighborhoods, a school where there are no cops or metal detectors, no gang recruitment, no fear.

An unreal school that is mostly black, but with a smattering of whites and Latinos, and where every student who sees a stranger in the halls goes up to the newcomer, introduces himself, shakes his hand, looks him in the eye and calls him Mister.

Leo High School, at 79th and Sangamon, seemed pretty unreal to me, too

How can the students at Leo High School thrive without air conditioning? How can the Leo athletes field a competitive track and field team without proper training facilities?

It has old fashioned 1926 air conditioning ( open a window) and the kids practice in halls, or at Dan Ryan Woods.

Nothing amiss there, or in the hallowed halls and stairs.

It gets a tad warm and close on the odd days.

The school will be closed in a couple of years.
White flight to the burbs (Br. Rice, Marist, etc.) was the start of its demise.

    Where have you been genius?

White flight occurred in the late 1960′s.

And the effects are still being felt.

At least you finally acknowledge its occurence and have stopped making excuses for racism.

Write check to Leo, DML. All them folks you like to tag as racist do. Nothing kills racism like involvement. Step up; the sidelines are way to thick with talkers. Leo is all about doing -Facta Non Verba. Or do you just like to talk?

I vote with my feet, having moved onto Leo’s block in 1965 and promptly saw all the white neighbors move away, as well as Standard Bank, Woolworths, Jupiter Stores, Household Finance Co., Franks Department Store, Burt’s Men’s Store, Armor’s Certified Grocery Store, House of Lum’s Chinese Restaurant, the Capitol Theater,Sunset Club across the street, Wimpy’s Hamburgers, the Hamburger/Soda shop on Morgan Street, Taurus Flavors Ice Cream, – - – etc. , through it all, I stayed, married, raised a family all without running away from a problem and soothing a conscience by writing a check, but staying and being part of the solution – and also staying in the area that the city charges property tax but delivers fewer services.
