In fact, as Rauner has been illustrating in his recent speeches, state workers’ pay has been skyrocketing despite there being less of them, contribute only 12% for their health insurance premiums, and receive far more pension benefits in retirement than they put in over a 26-year career.

How many private sector workers can claim any of that?

For a true apples to apples comparison – measuring up Illinois state workers with other state workers in the country – the Prairie State easily ranks in the top five highest compensation for government workers in 2013 according to Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Bureau data.
