Thomson shouldn’t be Illinois GOP’s trump card

Dennis Byrne 1 December 2009 3 Comments

Republicans won’t win back Illinois by demagoguing the possible transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees to a largely vacant state prison in northwestern Illinois.

They’ve got too many winning issues — the bollixed state of Illinois, corruption and malfeasance, the cosmic health care legislation, President Barack Obama’s foreign policy weaknesses — to spend their time whining about the supposed dangers of depositing suspected terrorists in the Thomson Correctional Center. It’s as if Republicans were desperate for something to club Democrats with, so they settled on the most emotional issue they could find.

    I will respectfully disagree Dennis.

    1) I am sure that terrorists could be managed securely by sane people, but I am also sure that the gaggle of Illinois politicians that brought us Tony Rezko and Stuart Levine and their ilk can’t manage licensing of an orthopedic clinic without cocaine, Syrian bank accounts, and orgies in the Purple Hotel in Lincolnwood. Rezko’s CFO Jack Lavin is still in charge of Economic Development in Illinois. Should we really trust these same guys with national security?

    2) The ludicrous claims from the White House of some type of economic gain by having more tourists in Galena because there will be terrorists families coming to town is perhaps the worst economic development plan imaginable. The White House claims 280 jobs will be created by prison visitors. Does Mrs. Mullah really enjoy taffy and fudge that much?

    3) As a political issue, safety and security resonate with a wide cross section of Illinois voters. Galena is a completely unique city, matched only by Venice for its high grade of architectural integrity. The Galena area is one of the top spots for tourists in Illinois. Who really wants to vacation next to a terrorist prison?

    4) Again as a Republican issue, Illinois Republicans can show that national Democratic politicians (Durbin/Obama) are dooming Illinois to a Prison economy because of their complete lack of common business sense. Running against Washington DC strikes me as a very good idea right now.

The Democrats have functionally bankrupted the state, and their only solution is to bring terrorists here to make it all better. The message adds in to the general corruption and bad management Dems have shown in Illinois.

The State needs some political competition and leadership. If it requires an appeal to emotions as well as quantification, I think it is well worth it.

I’m with Mr. Powers on this one. However, Dennis raises a good point: Republicans should be cautious of overselling their message. They are being labelled sissies and hysterics by the left, and that will not win a single vote.

The message should be that this is decision is being RUSHED through the state with unseemly HASTE because it is toxic on the national and international levels. Democrats in Washington have connived with Democrats in Illinois to sweep these guys under the rug. NO due process for state residents has been shown (just a mock process with a foregone conclusion) and there will be no serious consideration of the DOWNSIDE for us, which will be considerable. Our profile on the international stage will rise, but not in the way Mayor Daley wanted. New York was squarely in the terrorists’ sights for DECADES before 911–meet Chicago, the new New York. Hey, it works for Schumer!

No one else in the world wants these guys, but we’re supposed to rejoice that they’re coming here? Keep hitting this note in a rational, measured way and it will work as part of the larger Republican message.

Good points all. Republicans can differentiate themselves from Democrats in a rational, calm manner. In fact, Republicans could make hay on a couple of the points. But if the terrorists come here, I don’t think that it is the end of the world. Nor of Illinois. Nor of Thomson. Of course that’s based on the feds (and no one having anything to do with Illinois) running the place.
