Protesters Disrupt Hanrahan Funeral at St. Giles, Oak Park

The funeral of former States Attornery Ed Hanrahan at St. Giles in Oak Park was disrupted by protesters appearing to be members of the Black Panther movement. The Cook County Sheriff was called to remove the protesters.

Just before 7 p.m. mass time at Ed Hanrahan’s wake last Thursday, June 11, five or six black people entered crowded St. Giles Church in Oak Park, two of them carrying video cameras, and pushed their way to the front, where the coffin lay, making quite a stir.

There were eight men and two men. They arrived at about 6PM and, shouting “Black Power” and other things, they loudly pushed and shoved people in the aisle on their way to the front of the church and the casket. It terrified many inside who thought the camera was a weapon. One Judge hid behind a pillar. Women ducked down in pews. Many in their 80’s simply froze in terror not knowing what to do. The family of Edward Hanrahan, grieving over his loss, were further distressed.
