On a recent day in federal court, a quiet settled over the courtroom as Stuart Levine answered questions about his past.

It wasn’t just the drug-binge parties and snorting 10 lines of animal tranquilizer mixed with crystal meth at the Purple Hotel that stunned the courtroom.

It was an interminable list of scams that one man was able to pull off for decades.

Did he steal $6 million from one charity, keep half and never pay it back?

“Yes,” he said plainly.

Levine, wearing an ill-fitting suit and glasses, was asked if he rewarded a dying friend who entrusted him with his estate by stealing $2 million from the dead man’s children. “Yes,” he said.

    The vacant Purple Hotel is now a “White Elephant” in suburban Lincolnwood. It is on Touhy Avenue, close to the Edens Expressway. At various times, it was part of the Hyatt and Raddison hotel chains.

    The hotel achieved a measure of infamy as convicted Teamster’s attorney, Allen Dorfman, was murdered in the parking lot of the hotel in 1983. Apparently, the mob was concerned that Dorfman was preparing to testify for the prosecution in return for a deal.

    Levine must have been aware of the irony of using this hotel. Lincolnwood village officials dream of the day when the hotel can be razed.

    Levine testified that he was being blackmailed (how ironic got to love it) and that when he told the FBI, it stopped…Have to wonder who was blackmailing him? And did the feds get his $300,000 back or did the blackmailer get to keep it??? There is a blackmailer in this group…Do you remember who???
