Four Questions about Earmark Abuse for Rep. Schakowsky
Recently, Big Government told of a proposed fiscal year 2009 federal budget earmark intended for the Save-A-Life Foundation (SALF), a Chicago-area nonprofit that went belly-up late last year. The article questioned why IL Democrat Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, who introduced the appropriation, wanted to fund SALF years after the charity was the subject of a string of media exposes, including four hard-hitting ABC7 Chicago I-Team reports.
Rep. Schakowsky eventually cancelled her earmark for SALF, perhaps in response to scrutiny last January from a conservative blogger, Doug Ross. She wouldn’t answer his questions then, and, according to Big Government, she still won’t now. Here’s what Ross and Big Government wanted to know:
1. What was the dollar amount of Schakowsky’s intended 2009 earmark for SALF?
2. Why was Rep. Schakowsky funding a non-profit years after it was the subject of four ABC7 News Chicago exposes?
3. What’s the relationship between Rep. Schakowsky and the charity’s founder/president Carol J. Spizzirri, whose organization obtained “at least $8.6 million in federal and state grants”? (Chicago Tribune)
4. Does Rep. Schakowsky think SALF should be investigated in order to determine if those millions were properly spent?
Since Rep. Schakowsky’s 2009 SALF earmark didn’t get funded, do these questions matter? Why not let this sleeping dog lie and…move along, nothing to see here? On the other hand, one might ask if this illustrates the degree of due diligence Rep. Schakowsky applies to all her funding requests.

It seems supremely oxymoronic to have Schakowsky on the House Intelligence Committee. If you have ever witnessed Schakowsky making a public address on the House floor, it is pretty clear that, ideology aside — she is several sandwiches short of a full picnic basket.
Not to be forgotten is the fact is that while her present husband went to prison for check kiting, Jan was employed by the same political action committee operated by her spouse yet she claimed no knowledge of the crimes occurring there. That is about as credible as Patti Blagojevich denying her part in her husband’s unethical pay to play politics.
But, Dan! Ain’t she great? Sorry . . .obvious irony is sarcasm and that is just so mean . . .not like slapping ‘the help’ of course, but mean nevertheless. I am so mean.
Nobody ever mentions how “actively” Schakowsky lobbied Blagojevich to be named as President-elect Obama’s successor in the US Senate. To his credit, in what was quite possibly one of his only sound decisions as governor, Blagojevich totally ignored Schakowsky’s pleading to be promote from the US House to the Senate. Governor Rodman regarded her as a complete joke.
Why Dan, I did nothing but mention that fact in 2008 . . .well I had a few snowcones and moonpies . . ., but I mentioned the fact that Jan was up Blago’s Boxers for months.

Even some Washington Insiders, like Chris Cillizza and the folks at the Detroit Examiner seem wise to Schakowsky – you don’t need to be a Phi Beta Kappan on this one:

You are correct, sir. I should have qualified my previous statement and limited my comment to the so-called “mainstream media.”
Everyone has a right to criticize any elected official or candidate, and I’m sure that Jan Schakowsky is far from perfect. But I say that I truly love her deeply, and her husband is a great friend, and terribly maligned, as are manhy other people I know.
I’ve met Jan’s Republican opponent, Joel Pollak, on several occasions and he is a very intelligent, articulate and I believe ethical individual, but certainly not as liberal as Jan.
No matter, I wish Jan were our candidate for the U.S. Senate except for Dan Hynes who for reasons of his own did not want it, even though he ran for it in 2004.
I hope to see Jan next Tuesday at a semi-ceremonial event where she will be in attendance with my former nemesis Helen Shiller, who has become one of my good and great friends, and certainly one of the most able and effective public servants in Chicago, and I really mean servant, since April 2007. She knows and I know what I mean by this, and so would anyone else who understands our pension laws and rules.
She has not always been right, just as Jan has always not been right; but they are both well motivated and their hearts and minds are in the right place.
