Durbin, Burris Vote to Continue Funding Acorn

Ed Morrissey 15 September 2009 27 Comments

Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE) introduced an amendment to the HUD and Transportation appropriation bill to strip ACORN of all federal funding.  A week ago, Johanns wouldn’t have gotten the amendment to the floor.  Today, however, after three straight days of BigGovernment.com’s video exposés of ACORN offices in Washington DC, New York City, and Baltimore offering assistance to pimping, tax evasion, and trafficking in underage Salvadorean girls, Johanns not only got his vote — but he got an impressive bipartisan showing.  The Senate passed the Johanns amendment 83-7.

The seven Senators supporting ACORN:

  • Dick Durbin (D-IL)
  • Roland Burris (D-IL)
  • Robert Casey (D-PA)
  • Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
  • Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
  • Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
  • Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)

Illinois is so fortunate to have such honorable politicians as Durbin and Burris. Acorn, imported child prostitution and tax evasion? Very impressive men. The gang of 7 who apparently support ACORN’s activity should be tarred and feathered. I guess you get what you pay for. And based on the quality of Durbin and Burris, Illinois voters must not have invested much. Motivates this voter to get politically active for the next elections.

  • Sue said:

Of course Durbin and Burris supported them. They need ACORN to get elected. Hopefully, Durbins “invite” to represent us will be revoked!!

  • Dan Kelley said:

Durbin does not need to hold town hall meetings with his constituents to listen to their concerns. He is morally superior and knows better than the rest of us as this vote demonstrates.

The funniest part really is Patrick Leahy.
Mr. Holy Defender of Justice in America… votes to support the biggest criminal organization since the Mafia!

WTG Pat! We’ve always known you were full of it…
now you went out of your way to prove it!

    What a bunch of dirt-bags!

This ACORN scandal truly makes Obama look really bad. As most readers know Obama worked for and worked with ACORN years back. Later, Obama provided millions of dollars to ACORN while fervently defending ACORN as an honest and valuable organization. I am certain Obama knew all along this ACORN is a criminal outfit.

I am looking forward to discovering what organization Democrats will use in 2010 to engage in voter fraud and curious to learn what organization Obama will use in 2012 to engage in voter fraud.

This is certain, any left liberal who hires ACORN to perform campaign work will certainly be tainted and will certainly lose an election. Any politician associated with ACORN can be fairly labeled as corrupt.

Amuses me ACORN belongs to Obama; he cannot blame this on Bush.

I am predicting within a few days those senators who voted against ACORN will be labeled racists.

    …but not pimps!

Charlie Rangel, Barney Frank and the Congressional Black Caucus will come to the rescue of ACORN.

As you know Charlie Rangel is the chair of the House Ways and Means committee which is responsible for writing our tax laws. Rangel is amongst the most infamous and forgetful of tax cheats. Chuck will simply write a tax law exempting ACORN from any investigation or prosecution.

Our Congressional Black Caucus will jump up then take to beating Americans over the head with white guilt while harmoniously singing, “Racism! This is racism, y’all!”

Johanns’ amendment will face fierce opposition in Congress. Charles Rangel wields a lot of power in Congress evidenced by Pelosi refusing to have Rangel step down from his chair position despite Rangel obviously committing a variety of tax crimes. Rangel also owns several Democrats on the Ethics committee charged with investigating Rangel for ethics violations.

The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) is well known as a strong supporter of ACORN. Many members of the CBC have much power; Hastings, Burris, Waters, Meeks, Jackson and, of course, Rangel amongst others. Readers can count on the CBC putting up a fierce fight in favor of ACORN.

Barney Frank will prove problematic. Previously, Michelle Bachmann introduced an amendment similar to Johanns’ amendment, introduced her amendment to the Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act to prevent ACORN from being funded. Barney Frank is the chair of the House Financial Services Committee which, at the last minute, stripped out Bachmann’s amendment. Barney Frank is also a strong supporter of ACORN.

Between Rangel, Frank and the CBC there is a good chance Johanns’ amendment will be defeated in Congress. Pelosi, of course, will be a wild card; which way she votes will depend on how much botox is injected into her face and brain on voting day.

Personally, I am giving Johanns’ amendment a 50-50 chance of making its way into the wording of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill.

Durbin and Burris do NOT represent the good people of Illinois.
We are embarrased by them. The Cook County machine gets them elected, and people outside that area are not served by them.
If you examine Durbins voting record cannot believe that any moderate would vote for him.

I’d wish I was shocked. But I’m not.

If anyone would like to call the senators to express their disappointment:

    Dick Durbin’s office 312.353.4952
    Roland Burris’s office 312.886.3506

  • Jack said:

Ok, You people that voted for Dick Durbin for another term, please stand up. Just who voted for this elitist far left, out step, politician? No one will admit it.
I predict the same for Obama in a year.

  • Karen said:

I called both Durbin and Burris’ office to let them know I was disgusted that they voted to continue funding ACORN. I also wanted to know why they voted to continue support and when they are up for re-election.

Burris is up for re-election in 2010 according to his office. His office could not comment on why he voted to continue supporting ACORN.

I called Durbin’s Illinois office and they told me I needed to call his DC office! Durbin is up for re-election in 2012. The lady that aswered the phone was obviously reading off of a pre-printed response, as the phones must be ringing off the hook! It was a lame response!

It is time to get involved, if you have not done so already, call both offices and speak up! Since 1993 ACORN has received $53 MILLIONS dollars of our hard earned tax dollars!!!! I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THIS; IT IS TIME TO START CLEANING HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Dick Durbin – (312)353-4952 DC Office (202)224-2152
    Roland Burris – (312)886-3506

Don’t worry Illinois, I am just as embarrassed…I’m from Pennsylvania (you know, the state that clings to their guns and bibles – according to the Prez.)

Our Senator, Casey, also voted to support ACORN. How humiliating!! I went to the Shanksville Memorial on 9-11 and he was there, proud as a peacock.. Disgusting!

    Can’t wait until 2010!!!!!!!

  • The Stig said:

I called Durbin’s Springfield, IL office, again same scripted response…

I’m embarrassed to live in this state…we are seriously the laughing stock of the nation.. Ryan, Blago, Burris, Durbin… I just can’t take these people anymore.

It is hard (well not really) that IL has not one, but two idiots who voted to keep funding ACORN. Durbin needs to be out next term. He has shown his true side and he is a JOKE

  • John D. said:

Yes Durbin is scum. He was somewhat decent years back. He is a product of the unions (SEIU) and Acorn. Throw a little of the Chicago area in and you have a corrupt Senator. You need to look beyomd him and see that the same people supported Blago and our current Gov. Look who just endorsed him. Same people. They are all corrupt. Yes Durbin is a slim ball. But, in the next 5 years you all will forget this and re-elect him again. He knows this. Why he craps on us now. He does not answer your calls or mail. Only if you are important to him. Sleep well, 2014 is a long way off.

  • Sunny Remington said:

    Friends and Fellow Illinoisans!

NOW is the time for us all to STAND UP to these crooks and charlatans! The good people of this state are sick and tired of being the punch line to all the BLAGO-”Chicago Way” and Daley Machine jokes!

When the level of corruption sinks below tax-payer fraud to the aiding and abetting of illegal immigrant child prostitution rings, we must act decisively by protesting the offices of Durbin and Burris.

We need to take back our power and show these two hacks who their bosses are… we, the people, the Voters of Illinois!

I was disgusted to learn that both of my Senators were among the 7 that voted to continue funding ACORN with taxpayer money. 83-7 in favor to cut tax funding to ACORN. What a couple of tools!!!
Here is my letter to them:
I was very disappointed to learn that you were one of seven Senators who voted to continue funding ACORN with taxpayer money. ACORN has been involved in voter registration fraud with at least 30 recent convictions. Now, there is new evidence that the organization is willing to help criminals skirt tax laws while setting up brothels with underage girls. This is very disturbing! Why would you vote to continue funding an organization that obviously has serious problems of corruption? If you ever wonder why the American people think the people in Washington are corrupt; this is why. I am truly disgusted to think that you are a voice for me in Washington.

  • J. Shelton said:

Until the corruption ends in Chicago, the rest of the state will suffer. It seems the only way the rest of the state will get a fair voice is to create a 51st state. That being Cook and the 7 collar counties. We can call it Corruptionland. Then the rest of us will have a chance to be represented.

    Illinoisans:

I feel your pain. My state is the size of a small orafice…and, indeed, the biggest orafice in our corrupt little state just “represented us” as pimps, child prostitution traffickers, and tax evaders.

Hopefully, Rhode Islanders will make a good showing at Sheldon Whitehouse’s “picnic of the uninvited” to be held on the State House lawn tomorrow!

  • Steve said:

I can understand Burris — he’s just a parasite waiting to finish his term next year and get even more pension money. Durbin must be so in bed with Obama that he can’t oppose anything the great magnificent one was ever associated with. Remember when all the libs compared Jesus to a community organizer and Palin to Pontius Pilate, as if being a community organizer was morally superior to being a governor? Jesus didn’t condone tax evasion nor prostitution, so once again we see how morally corrupt the democrats are. They support anything, even the ghettoization of communities to stay in office. People, take off your blinders.

Dithering Dick Durbin and Tombstone Roland are the Doublemint Twins of Illinois Politics 2009!

Dithering Dick was ‘Dead Set Against’ Rolnd taking his seat and then held the chair out for him.

It is a wonder that these two geniuses find their way to work.

I am from illinois and I used to wonder how someone from Massachusets could look themselves in the mirror based on their senators.. I am ashamed to say with Durbin and Burris I will remove the mirrors in my house. They now serve no purpose.

  • John R said:

Does anyone out there know the procedure to have and Illinois senator recalled? It is far past time to take this into consideration.
I’ve been watching Durbin on the news and CSPAN for sometime now misrepresenting the people of Illinois. If you listen to him long enough you’ll realize that he is bought and paid for by these kinds of special intrests in only in order to get himself re-elected (DUH!).
Of course these special interests invariably eat up vast amounts of taxpayer money and hurt the majaority of Illinois residents.
To put it simply, he is in the pocket of organized crime.

  • A.G Wojnarowski said:

I sure hope that whoever runs against these 7 blind OBAMABOTS uses the ACORN card with swift and reckless abandon. All seven must be removed from office without delay!

  • John S said:

Being from SC and having all the recent “flack” over Joe “You lie” Wilson and the “Lovernor” Mark Sanford it is reaffirming to know there are at least 7 members of the senate that have been undeniably recognized as certifiable idiots.

  • Joe Laughlin said:

Sen. Dick Durbin is worthless. He has always voted in favor illegals over the American worker. Chicago is estimanted to have 2 millions illegals. The Democratic party see these as future Democratic votes. That is why Obama will try to make them all legal next year. These people are not the cream of the crop. A high per cent of the crime in this country is created by them. Dich Durbin needs to be shown the door.
