Did It Really Take 15 Minutes with Glenn Beck to Notice that the Social Justice Movement is full of Leftist Hacks?
Glenn Beck pointed out what is obvious (and sorry repetitive) to our readers, the Social Justice movement in US Churches is a fully politicized bunch of Leftist Hacks. Says Beck:
I’m begging you, your right to religion and freedom to exercise religion and read all of the passages of the Bible as you want to read them and as your church wants to preach them . . . are going to come under the ropes in the next year. If it lasts that long it will be the next year. I beg you, look for the words ’social justice’ or ‘economic justice’ on your church Web site. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words. Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes!”
Jim Wallis wants to boycott the show
The New York was shocked, and gave it some ink, under the guise that Christians take orders from Jim Wallis (we don’t)
Even the usually sensible First Things was drawn into the fray.
I think if anyone else had made the remark it would have been hard to dismiss the anti-Catholic undertones. But Beck is a special case: He is too prone to say any dumb thing that pops into his head and too ignorant about history and religion to truly understand the implications of his statement. This doesn’t excuse him, of course, but it certainly is reason not to be too shocked when a self-professed “rodeo clown” advises people to leave their churches over Catholic “code words” like social justice.
So here goes, a note to the media. The “Social Justice” movement may have had noble intentions, but devolved into a complete fraud. Political games took a huge priority over helping the poor. I have been active in the Social Justice movement in the Archdiocese of Chicago, whose own leaders will tell you it is an Alinskyite construct and has been an Front organization since the 1960’s. All types of trickery was used to get Church funding for sham organizations (ACORN for example) whose sole purpose was to irritate poor people while collecting money from the Church.
Many in the Hierarchy, Clergy, Archdiocese employees, and donors have become increasingly disturbed by the waste and fraud at these front organizations, and have taken action. A new team at the Archdiocese of Chicago has begun some very basic reforms, including
1) Not giving grants to any organizations that are first, second, or third parties in the promotion or support of abortion, contraception, or any activity contrary to Catholic moral teaching.
2) Seeing human development through a broader lens as reflected in “Caritas in Veritate” and other recent social encyclicals that address issues of abortion and contraception as being related to issues of material poverty. This means that pregnancy centers, abstinence/chastity education programs, and marriage strengthening organizations which serve the poor would be eligible for Catholic Campaign for Human Development ( CCHD) funding.
It may be possible to reform the Social Justice movement, and it may take some fireworks from Glenn Beck to get people to notice that they are not promoting Social Justice by financing Leftist political schemesters. But there is still a lot of work to be done. In our parish, there was a long running series of commentary and protests against the Iraq War, for the length of the War. Fair enough, but as soon as Barack Obama was elected President, the protests immediately stopped, and the Social Justice committee has been quiet about escalating the Afghan War and the continuation of the Iraq War. It just might take Glenn Beck to fix this.
