City Council Reduction: Greater Efficiency or Power Grab?

A leading Chicago watchdog group is throwing its weight behind a series of controversial ideas to revamp city government and save money — including halving the City Council to 25 aldermen.

In a report set for release this morning, the Civic Federation argues that the action would not only reduce the city’s overhead by at least $6.5 million a year but encourage aldermen to focus less on local services and more on monitoring the mayor.
