Chicago Murder Rate: #1 (or #2) Among Global Cities

NBCChicago 30 July 2012 3 Comments

Take it with a grain of salt, but (the generally juvenile) NBC’s Ward Room is reporting

Chicago likes to compare itself to other world cities, so Ward Room thought it would find out how we rank in violence. It turns out no one can top us. Among what are considered Alpha world cities, Chicago has the highest murder rate — higher even than the Third World metropolises of Mexico City and (sic) Sao Paolo.

Chicago—IL, Earlier this month, on July 10th, 62 year old Delfino Mora, a disabled Mexican Immigrant was assaulted around 5 a.m. in a West Side Rogers Park alley as he was collecting aluminum cans to provide for his family. According to prosecutors the three suspects that attacked Mora decided to play a game called “Pick Em Out and Knock’ Em Out”. When they spotted Delfino Mora, the alleged suspects Malik Jones, 16, Nicholas Ayala, 17, and Anthony Malcolm 18 surrounded Mr. Mora asked him if he had money in his pockets and when Mora did not respond, Jones punched him in the head. Mora then fell to the ground and hit his head on the concrete with a loud crack that could be heard on the video the perpetrators had taken and posted on Facebook. Mr. Mora eventually died of cerebral hematoma. Jones then took $60 dollars from the victim’s wallet and the three fled as you could hear the laughing of them about the attack.

Community activist Raul Montes, Jr. feels that there is no program at this point or community program to stop sociopaths and psychopaths like these three suspects that allegedly conducted this heinous crime on Delfino Mora that cost his life. New York City has three times the amount of the population of the City of Chicago but Chicago has almost the same amount of homicides to this date. Montes was instrumental in helping the Mora family resolve the issue of Chase Bank not wanting to give the family the donations they had received from the general public because of several discrepancies of the bank. Montes felt the family was discriminated and hassled especially at this difficult time. Statistics show that for every 100,000 in population Chicago has three times the amount that any global city. For example, Chicago has 15.2 homicides. Los Angeles 7.6 and New York City has 6.4 and Chicago’s murder rate #1 or #2 among global cities.

On Wednesday evening, community activists, residents, public officials and the Mora family will hold a vigil and march to the site where Mr. Mora was killed and protest against the violence in the City of Chicago that has escalated and “want justice” for the senseless killing of their father.
