Brady Reaches Out to Republicans. Roars To Lead

Thomas F. Roeser 15 March 2010 5 Comments

I was all set to run a column pressing Bill Brady to work harder in his campaign for Governor, until the DuPage Kickoff Sunday knocked this piece out of the park.  Bill Brady, and his fellow McLean County classmate Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady (no relation) have done the unthinkable: The Republicans are unifying behind their chosen candidate for Governor.

Kirk Dillard, Adam Andrzejewski,  Dan Proft, Jim Ryan, Bob Schillerstrom, and Matt Murphy (as proxy for Andy McKenna) were all there endorsing Bill Brady and pledging to help him win this fall.  A full array of Republican and conservative activists, signage and banners, some noisemakers, and a early serving of St. Patrick’s day cheer, and sure enough the campaign season is on.

Here’s the (now obsolete) piece

Weeks after Bill Brady was certified as the Republican nominee for governor, most of his opponents and key Republican operatives who were for other candidates haven’t heard from him: no reaching out, no contact, no nothing.  I’m talking about my Dillard colleagues, my Proft colleagues, my Andrzejewski colleagues, McKenna colleagues, and some of my Jim Ryan colleagues (those, that is, who want a Republican in the governor’s office).   I’m talking about savvy campaign leaders who would be very useful to Brady to help him win.
Well the event in Addison wasn’t just savvy, it was the right people at the right place at the right time and it worked.  Bill Brady is doing what is needed to blast (a weepy) Pat Quinn of of the governor’s mansion this fall.
The Republicans have a chance to win, I hate to see a campaign fizzle because of inexperience and non-adult attitudes…believing that the losers are expected to trot around the ring and spread rose petals before the reviewing stand of the garland-bedecked winner in humiliation ala the old Roman Games.
Trotting is cancelled, garlands discarded, and the reviewing stand is dismantled.  Brady was gracious in victory and his opponents were aggressively supporting the candidate in Addison on Sunday.  The divisive days of the old Republican party of George Ryan and Bob Kjellander are now officially over.
Next steps: Reach out to disaffected Democrats, pro-life Latinos, Rev. Meeks and the African Americans for education reform, gun owning union members, and the independents who are sick of the corruption of one-party rule in the State of Illinois.

Where was that parasite, Jim Edgar? Didn’t Brady pander to his holiness sufficiently?

Tom, you refer to your “discarded” draft article, but you posted it in whole on your own personal blog. Will you put a very prominent footnote to that blog posting (at least) in consideration of your praise of Brady’s effort made clear in your article here?

Your “discarded” draft actually contained some blatant falsehoods: the press reported (accurately) that Brady sat down with McKenna merely days after McKenna conceded to Brady and Brady had also met with Andrejewksi and Dillard. Also, its not been “weeks” since the certification, but only six working days — Brady can’t possibly talk to every “key Republican operative” who worked for another candidate within that time. Don’t his own supporters need to get thanked in the meantime?

I note that your discarded draft refers more particularly to “key Republican operatives” who worked for other candidates. Looks like some of them got to you to do their dirty work of threatening Brady to serve their interests in another paycheck. I surprised that you weren’t wise to that part of their agenda. I thought that kind of “rule or ruin”, or more particularly, pay me my baksheesh or I’ll sabotage your campaign, was something you’ve railed against for years?

    John,

The final draft is as published and approved by Tom Roeser, Editor in Chief of the Chicago Daily Observer, and sounds to me like a move towards victory this fall. As noted the blog entry was a draft, which is superdeded by the published version

Sniping time is over. Brady is doing his bit and put forth a fine presentation Sunday The Republicans, including you if you are a Republican and not some Axelrodian plant, need to get on board for this fall if they want to prevent Blago’s 3rd term.

With all the Pat Quinns, John Filans and Jack Lavins out there, why is anyone pointing fingers at other Republicans?

I’d say Axelrodian plant is most likely. It is easy enough to fall into another Judy Barr Tarpit, and get us *blago3* Don’t fall for it Tom.

Mr. Striker, if you remember during the primary, Jim Edgar cut radio ads for Mark Kirk and Elizabeth Coulson, referring to them both as “fiscal conservatives.” That’s Jim Edgar code language for, “Hey, at least they’re not socially conservative pro-life kooks!” Bill Brady is fiscally conservative as well, but he’s also a pro-lifer. Hope that answers your question…
