The disinfection debate: How clean should the Chicago River be?

To know the Chicago River is to get down to water level and float along what Gary Mechanic describes as a “highway that flows through the heart of Chicago.”

Seeing this highway from 60 feet above on a bridge is simply not the same experience as seeing the powerful persona of the river “from the river’s point of view,” said Mechanic, president of the Illinois Paddling Council, an umbrella organization for Illinois paddling clubs.

Together Again, Rev. Wright, and Fr. Pfleger

About 600 of Chicago’s top African-American lawyers and judges gave standing ovations Thursday to two preachers who’ve been vilified in recent months for their sermons that went nationwide on the Web.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright and the Rev. Michael Pfleger became headaches for Democrat Barack Obama’s presidential campaign when their controversial comments became fodder for conservative talk-show hosts.

hicago papers, radio, and television haven’t been hagiographic in their coverage of local-rising-star-turned-Democratic-nominee Barack Obama. They dug deep into Obama’s real-estate dealings with developer/felon Tony Rezko, and provided gavel-to-gavel coverage of Rezko’s trial.

But if one were to assemble a list of the revelations that have most damaged Obama’s efforts to win the presidency, two at or near the top would be the video of Obama’s pastor, Jeremiah Wright; and Obama’s long, working relationship with William Ayers, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and founder of the radical Weathermen domestic terror group, which planted bombs in public buildings.
