DePaul President Responds to Cardinal George on Gay Promotion Charge

Keep Your Hands Where They Belong—Off our Propagandizing for

Gay Rights No Matter What the Church Says.

But Understand We Intend to Keep Mis-Advertising that We’re a Catholic University, Caveat Empteor!

DePaul President Reverend Dennis Holtschneider, C. M. responded last week to The Catholic New World column written by Francis Cardinal George critical of the university for promoting the “Out There” conference for teachers and students to make them “sensitive” to homosexual behavior. While the archbishop stressed the obligations of all Christians not to be hateful to others on grounds of sexual orientation, he nevertheless pointed out that portions of the conference promoted gay behavior.

The response acknowledges this but is as intellectually dishonest as is possible to be, evading Holtschneider’s own and his misnamed “Catholic” university’s obligations and hiding behind the tattered fabric of “academic freedom.” His naked rationale has become a part of secular universities. But for so-called ... Read More...

The white whale lurking behind the mayor’s new tax increases

The first thing you need to know about Mayor Daley’s budget, released on October 10, is that it’s nothing more than a projection. The mayor’s bean counters calculate how much money the city can expect to take in through fees, fines, and taxes over the next year and balance that against the amount they plan to spend. If, one year later, the city brings in more or spends less than anticipated, there’s a surplus and taxpayers would theoretically get a refund (ha ha ha). If it brings in less or spends more, there’s a deficit, requiring new fees and taxes to make up the difference.

Bernie..or as he says Berny Stone's Citadel Crumbling

As the Oct. 29 filing deadline approaches, area political circles are awash with rumor, bluff, duplicity, deceit, and creeping paranoia – all the usual political nonsense.

Here’s an early summary:

In Chicago’s 50th Ward, which encompasses West Rogers Park, basic instincts are unsheathed and unrestrained.

From the perspective of 79-year old Bernie (who spells his name Berny) Stone, a fading political icon who has been alderman since 1973, the 2008 Democratic committeeman race is all about self-perpetuation. If he loses his committeeman’s post, he’ll be a political eunuch, unable to either plausibly run for re-election in 2011, or to hand off the aldermanic job to his daughter, Ilana Stone Feketitsch, who is his chief-of-staff.

From the perspective of ambitious, 47-year old State Senator Ira Silverstein (D-8), who proudly claims that “Berny has been my mentor,” the 2008 committeeman’s race is all about self-preservation. Silverstein aspires to the Illinois Senate’

Chicago Sneaks Free Newspaper Killing Law into Effect

Even though all the Founding Fathers pretended that they hated the media (which then meant newspapers and tract publishing) each of them had their very own newspaper supporters and nearly all paid for tracts that supported their viewpoints and policies to be published. These tracts and newspapers were usually subscription supported, but sometimes they were freely distributed. Flash forward to today in Chicago. Today, thanks to a law ushered in the back door right under everyone’s noses, it is illegal to distribute free newspapers. Were the Founders alive today, Richard Daley, King of Chicago, would prevent them from distributing their political papers to the public. No speech in King Daley’s city… not without HIS say-so, anyway.
