So rather than extorting money from business for Real Estate tax work, Ald O’Connor specializes in extorting money from business for Real Estate development work.

Like Burke, O’Connor is an attorney but does not, he says, do property tax appeal work for clients with city business, a potential conflict that put Burke in the crosshairs, finally, of federal prosecutors. O’Connor says his clients are out-of-town retail vendors with no city deals. Burke says charges that he shook down a Burger King owner in his ward are without merit and vows to pursue re-election.


Still, O’Connor has been accused of pursuing another main boulevard of the Chicago Way—cashing in on zoning changes he controls in his Far North Side ward. His wife, Barbara, sells real estate. In 2008, the Chicago Tribune detailed alleged connections between their realms.
