Alvarez moves on the Vaneko case, but it’s not nearly enough
Only a federal investigation is acceptable.
Finally some official action on the death of a young man at the hands of a relative of Richard M. and Bill Daley. The Sun-Times, which has been pursuing this, reported:
Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez asked the Illinois State Police on Thursday to investigate the Chicago Police Department's handling of a homicide case involving Richard J. "R.J." Vanecko, who's a nephew of Mayor Daley and White House Chief of Staff William Daley.
Terrific. It's unclear that the state pollice can even investigate this. And if it can, that agency soon will be headed by an Alvarez assistant. This cannot be; not when Alvarez's own agency might have been involved in what could be a cover-up.
Only an investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office will inspire any confidence that this will be cleared up. How can that be done? I'm no lawyer, but I recall that federal law has been used in cases in which a person's civil rights have been denied. What can be a greater loss of a civil right than someone taking your life. Everyone whose fingerprints are on this case should be accountable to the law. Not even the Daley's should be excempt.
Remember the name: David Koschman. He's the young man who died from this "incident," "accident," or whatever the Chicago police who handled this case choose to call it. It is a young man in search of justice.
