Greeley (belly)aches

I’d like to be able to feel Andrew Greeley’s pain, but he hurts in so many places, I wouldn’t know where to start.

It’s a darn shame Obama had to “defend his outspoken pastor,” says G. in his Sun-Times column. I would have said he had to defend himself for picking the guy, and not in a month of Sundays at Trinity UCC on 95th St. or in any other church would I let him off the hook with “outspoken.”

“There is no evidence at all that the senator identifies with his clergyman, and overwhelming evidence to the contrary.” Other than he picked him as a veritable soul mate and guide and stayed with him 20 years.

Carol from Darien says:

The last line of the column reads, "Beat that for purple prose if you can. Does this guy get excited or not?"

Honestly, that is why I quit my Sun Times subscription. I got tired of this kind of schlock.

Pat Hickey says:

Bellaching is what Father Greeley has made a his own personal Irish Cottage Industry!

As a curate at Christ the King, Greeley belly-ached about pastoral duties; over his obligations to any Ordinary, he belly-ached; over his self-publicized banishment to AZ, he belly-ached; as to the 'bourgeoise nature' of Irish Catholicism, he belly-ached; Chastity, ditto; White Sox Championship and south side fans, OUI!

Greeley always was, continues to be and always will be a belly-ache-er.

What was he whining about, Jim? Haven't read the Stiff Collar in years.

Alan McNish says:

A.) Why hasn't he been excommunicated from the Church, as he seems to only use the Church to advance his wacked political ideology that is in direct conflict with the Church itself, and

B.) Why doesn't the Church put a
muzzle on him before he puts them into jeopardy with the IRS, since he advocates for political candidates in his column?

John Powers says:

Alan,

My opinion only, but...

a) Fr. Greeley is rather orthodox in his theology. He does liturgical work that is a complete in adherence to the Vatican as anyone. His politics aside..those are prudential matters, not theological.

b) Individual priests are free to publish political boosterisms. Churches are not. Much like someone working at the Red Cross expressing a political belief.
