Arguably the biggest local election this fall will be for Cook County state’s attorney, where Democrat Anita Alvarez will try to hold off Republican Tony Peraica. If you think about it, Alvarez is kind of a Peraica Bizarro (if it’s not the other way around). Peraica, a former precinct captain for Bill Lipinski, lost a couple runs for office as a Democrat before switching parties and winning a suburban seat on the Cook County board in 2002. Now he encounters the stench of Democratic Party corruption everywhere he turns, and without fail finds it loathsome and campaign-worthy—he just can’t find enough opportunities to talk to the press about problems with the county jail, the county sales tax, or the county board president.

Everybody had made much of Alvarez's fundraising...but her cash on hand is not that much at all. Peraica has huge name ID and is getting millions of dollars in free media each week on the evening news. She only has like $140,000 on hand. She can't buy ANY TV with that. And Peraica could even things up evenly by writing a $100,000 check.
Dan says:
Alvarez has enormous fundraising power and Peraica does not. She is raising money from dems and republicans alike. Peraica lost credibility in his last race for CC Bd Pres by his over the top antics which has thrown a wet blanket on his fundraising this time around. He would be wise to keep his power dry for a easier opponent like Stroger. If he continues in this race against a professional and qualified prosecutor like Alvarez who has no dirty laundry or skeletons, he loses more than just this race, he loses credibility which is in severe shortage for him to begin with. He will then have lost his 5th election and will not be in a position to win against Stroger if Stroger is indeed the dems candidate again next time around for CC Bd President. He should really find that exit strategy that everyone is saying he should find.

The whole fundraising system is corrupt. For one thing no person should be able to donate to a campaign in which their job is affected. This presidential election is a billion dollar endeavor. Legislation shouldn't be written by a pharmaceutical company that has just donated money to a politician. The whole system is corrupt.
