Mayor Daley’s Chicago: Where Police Power is Caprice Power

“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state: the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”—United States Constitution, second amendment of the Bill of Rights

Subject only to the police power, the right of the individual citizen to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.—- Constitution of the State of Illinois, Article 1, Section 22

Illinois’ 1970 Constitution provides gun grabbing counties and city councils with an invaluable mechanism so as to create two strata of gun rights in Illinois. One strata that would pass muster south of I. 80 in the more crimson part of Illinois, and another that would enable the northern regions of Illinois to infringe upon the second amendment rights of the law-abiding citizenry in cities like Evanston, Wilmette, and Chicago. The clause that enables such constitutional mischief is that pesky “subject only to the ... Read More...

A Counter Argument on Hiroshima and a Tribute to a Gallant American.

I read Chris Check’s reflections on the death of Brigadier General Paul Tibbets with great interest. Most historians believe that Tibbet’s role in the atom bombing of Hiroshima was the caused U. S. victory and the end of the Second World War. Check expresses reservations as to the necessity of this action, indeed whether or not the theory, practice and technology of modern warfare allows any war to be prosecuted in accordance with the Just War theory. Check does not seem to fall into the camp of those historical revisionists who make spurious claims that the Japanese were readying plans to surrender anyhow—which negated using the A-Bomb. Instead he offers a pointed criticism that the bomb was employed under any rationale and a concomitant reappraisal of Gen. Tibbets’ role on that historic mission.

Cicero, Aristotle, Augustine of Hippo, St. Thomas Aquinas and Hugo Grotious attempted to codify the requirements for ... Read More...

A Frank (Penn) Evaluation of Ron Paul

As I view the contradictory and relativist muddle that is the Ron Paul presidential campaign, I am grateful that I eschewed libertarianism as a political principle in favor of constitutional conservatism. Notwithstanding that, I confess finding much to admire about Ron Paul, the 1988 Libertarian Party presidential nominee.

He is a M. D. specializing in obstetrics, pro-life, who served his country as an Air Force flight surgeon.

He is adamant about abolishing much of the federal government based upon lack of constitutional foundation and ineptness and inefficiency. Here’s a list of things Paul wants to end because they have had failures in the past, or he sees them as useless:

the CIA,

the FBI,

the Department of Homeland Security,

the FDA,

the IRS,

Medicare,

DEA,

Our membership in the UN,

in NATO,

in NAFTA

in CAFTA.

That’s the short list.

This is ... Read More...

If One Can, Dun-Can (Hunter That Is)

Please forgive the clumsy pun in the title. You should know something of this remarkable man. Duncan Hunter was born on May 31, 1948, in Riverside, Calif., where his father was a real estate developer. He and his wife, Lynne, have two sons–one a Marine artillery officer who served two tours in Iraq–and several grandchildren. He left college to join the army, and served in Vietnam as a paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne bigade from 1969–1971. He received the Air Medal with clusters for participating in 24 airmobile assaults with that outfit. Gen. Chuck Yeager said this about Duncan Hunter. “Duncan is the best candidate for President that I know of- he has integrity, tenacity, courage, and diplomacy. I have known Congressman Duncan Hunter for over 35 years. Duncan served his country in the Army and is a Vietnam vet. In Vietnam, he served in one of the most dangerous ... Read More...

A Response to Laura Washington’s Call For Gun Cont

In her August 13 2007 Sun Times Op-Ed column, Laura Washington commented on the need for protection from “guns ubiquitous” combined with ‘sizzling temps’, “preachers, politicians and some cops and a whole lot of guns” that would create a “toxic and combustible mixture.” Then she said “don’t throw in a match”. (slander alert to the Chicago preachers, politicians, and cops who constitute Washington’s version of civic napalm)

She lauded Mayor Daley, Jesse Jackson, and Fr. Michael Fleger for “doing more than just about anyone to get guns off the streets”. She approvingly noted Daley’s vain efforts to “get anti gun legislation through the intractable and juvenile Illinois General Assembly.”

I absolutely agree with Mayor Daley’s and Washington’s desire to get guns off of the streets. As a former soldier and police firearm instructor, I am aware that a gun left on the street is contrary to the principle of good ... Read More...

There Are Many People Who Believe California

In 2005, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a measure banning hand-guns. That ban was overturned in 2006 by the San Francisco County Superior Court Judge James Warren.. He said a local government cannot ban firearms because only the California legislature can regulate their sale and possession by state statute.

Undeterred by this setback, the Supervisors renewed their unconstitutional efforts with a new edict—called “Proposition H.” (It should be more appropriately named “Preparation H” so as to facilitate its insertion into the Body Politic). The measure which Mayor Gavin Newsome signed August 7, 2007 requires residents to keep; their guns in lock boxes or have trigger locks on them. The law makes it illegal to possess or sell firearms in the city and county and requires firearms dealers to submit an inventory to the Police Chief every six months. “The measure’s co-sponsors concede it will have little effect on ...
