Two men who allegedly tagged “The Bean” sculpture in Millennium Park early on July 2nd were each ordered held on $10,000 bail after Cook County Judge David Navarro said he “[takes] offense at these offenses, these crimes that were alleged.”

Neither Rey Ortega nor Tino Guzman, both 20, has a criminal record. And Guzman isn’t even charged with painting the sculpture. He’s accused of spray painting a nearby bench.

It’s hard to gripe with the general idea behind the Chicago Community Bond Fund (CCBF). The organization raises money to post bond for people who cannot afford to post their own while awaiting trial.
But there seems to be a problem.

He’s 37. He has “Conservative Vice Lord” tattooed to his arm. He pleaded guilty to shooting a man in 1997. And he’s been sentenced to a combined 40 years in prison over the past 21 years. Chicago police say they received a tip about two men and a woman bagging narcotics inside a motel room in the 6200 block of North Lincoln on August 1st. When they arrived at the motel, the manager approached them and handed over a bullet. One of his housekeepers had found it in a room, and he wanted the responsible guests removed from his property, he said.

On this Independence Day, few people are likely enjoying their freedom more than Savion Canty. Charged with Class X felony aggravated carjacking with a weapon, Canty was being held without bail—until Tuesday.

That’s when Cook County Judge Marvin Luckman allowed him to go free by posting a $2,000 deposit. Canty, 20, did that right away.
