ShoreBank Corp. won a reprieve from a potentially crippling federal investigation of alleged Obama administration pressure on some of the nation’s biggest banks to invest in the ailing South Side financial institution.

Before finishing the massive Wall Street reform bill early this morning, Senate negotiators killed a provision that would have required the inspector general of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to examine all bank bailout deals since January 2009 for political pressure by the executive branch.
While broad in nature, the amendment — adopted Wednesday by House conferees — was clearly …

The Pro-Squid Chicago Media.
Say, whatever happened to that story that seemed to pass by in a twinkling of an eye about Gov. Quinn’s early parolees including one locked up for a 2008 murder disappearing after they were set free as part of Quinn’s infamous early release program? If anything should underscore the incompetence of the Quinn administration, this is it: yet after the first glimmer of the story…zip…nothing has been heard of it since.

This is only the most glaring case of the Chicago media tipping the scales to …

A friend of mine, who is involved in grassroots politics, called to tell me a close friend was being asked to be the Chairman of Catholic outreach for the Illinois Republican party. She said she was going to write a column about how GOD has chosen this as a test for him; would he do the right thing or would he allow himself to be used to get Catholics to support Mark Kirk?

I asked her who she would choose between Kirk and Ginnoulias. Her answer seems to be what …

McChrystal Removal.

Given that President Obama seemingly had to remove Gen. Stanley McChrystal for a Rolling Stone article that captured his insubordination…although I wish he had bit his lip and kept him on at this crucial stage of the Afghanistan war…he had a golden chance to reverse the dynamics with the appointment of David Petraeus…but botched it.

The statement removing McChrystal was excellent…courteous, gentlemanly, statesmanlike. Moreover for the first time it stressed Obama’s determination towin the war—an eloquent speech which affirmed the same clear vision that other presidents have shown …

Right now the State of Illinois and the nation at large are watching the brazen corruption of former Governor Rod Blagojevich on full display as his federal trial winds on. It’s a case that implicates several high-level officials in both parties and scores of connected contractors, lobbyists and insiders.

Blagojevich was indicted for selling almost everything that wasn’t nailed down. Want a board appointment to a posh state commission? That’ll be $25,000 in campaign cash. Want a lucrative state contract? Give us some money.
The one thing that stands out as the …

For weeks, Americans have been following the ongoing disaster in the Gulf of Mexico as a British Petroleum offshore oil well has been spewing thousands of gallons of crude oil into the ocean each day. At the same time, our diligent President has been busy golfing, attending musical concerts and watching the Washington Nationals play baseball. In addition to ignoring the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico for weeks on end, Mister Obama is also trying to deceive the American public about another runaway disaster.

For months and years, …

Now we have the heroics of lame duck Cook County Board President Todd Stroger, who just lost his Dem primary (having won election for his prior term to a seat being vacated by his dying dad, backed by our President BarackObama, then Senator) because of his corruption and huge tax and spend incompetence–to the rescue of Art Turner.

Kind of a consolation prize I guess, akin to the Goracle getting a Nobel Peace Prize and an Oscar after losing to GW Bush. But I digress.
Stroger gives Turner, currently a state legislator, a …

A movie many years ago was titled, “If Its Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium.” Not necessarily.
Its Tuesday and its Damascus, and Saturday to Monday was Beirut. If Barack Obama were running for President here he’d be a shoo in. Its not that the Muslim or Christian populations think he’s not strongly in support of Israel, but they do believe he wants to be evenhanded, just and fair.
I base my evaluation on the traditional experts: several bartenders, one barber and half a dozen taxi drivers.
Last night my …

This Sunday, one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People will address this year’s senior class at Gonzaga College High School in Washington. For Sister Carol Keehan, here’s a suggestion for an inspiring topic: “How to make it big.”

As president of the Catholic Health Association (CHA), the largest group of not-for-profit health care facilities in the country, Sister Carol, as she’s called, delivered an 11th-hour endorsement of President Obama’s health care reform bill. Herseal of approval appeared to give the legislation a Catholic blessing. It even earned Sister Carol one …

China just decided it will once again let its currency – the yuan – get stronger against the US dollar. This is an important milestone for China and a positive signal about its long term economic prosperity. The immediate reaction of the equity markets was very positive and we agree.

In essence, China is saying it thinks its currency will do a better job than the US dollar of retaining its value over time. Put another way, China is committed to having lower inflation than the US and …
