Reid, Nelson, Many Dems Will Pay Through the Nose.
Political sleight of hand is usually so deft that voters don’t see it until legislation is passed and signed. The Senate version of health care is clumsy, shows lawmakers taking federal bribes for their votes and two so-called “pro-life” Senators…Ben Nelson (Nebraska) and Robert Casey (Pennsylvania)… caught flat-footed in lies.

Never in U.S. history has a piece of legislation that is so widely disfavored by the electorate–as shown by poll after poll–been rammed down the throat of the country…which guarantees the architects of …

Without question, incumbent Todd Stroger’s performance as president of the Cook county board has precipitated serious distress among much of the county’s electorate, particularly whites. To coin a phrase: Toddlessness is happiness. Stroger has come to represent nepotism, incompetence and cluelessness run amok, and needlessly high taxes. The prospect of ousting the Toddler is, to many voters, cathartic, and a definite cure for chronic, governmental-induced flatulence.
With the Feb. 2 primary just weeks away, the ABT (Anybody But Todd) field — Cook County Clerk Dorothy Brown, Alderman Toni Preckwinkle (5th) and …

I spent part of Saturday on Central Street in Evanston. I had some Christmas shopping to do, so I stopped at “Let’s Tailgate.” The store is one of several specialty shops that stock athletic apparel and souvenirs associated with Northwestern University athletics. Over the years, I have patronized several similar stores, but I have to admit I like this business best because the proprietors are genuine Wildcat enthusiasts who follow the games and are always happy to make conversation with their customers.

The store is a family operation and its floors …

Let’s set the stage. If Illinois Democrats have proved one thing, it is that while they cannot govern, they can elect.
They control both Houses of the legislature, they own the governorship and all the other constitutional offices. By the very nature of things…state and national liberalism being what it has become since 1966: a secular humanist substitute for religious orthodoxy…the Democrats control the state media. Almost all the state columnists are Democrats; state broadcast TV is Democrat. The most powerful political organization in the nation is The Squid in which …

An empty deal would be worse than no deal at all, said the White House before Mr Obama travelled to the Copenhagen summit. As the meeting ended, Barack Obama was calling the Copenhagen accord – the emptiest deal one could imagine, short of a fist fight – an “important breakthrough”. Mr Obama’s credibility at home and abroad is one casualty of this farcical outcome.
The agreement cobbled together by the US, China, India, Brazil and South Africa is merely an expression of aims. It recognises the scientific case for keeping the …

It looks like we’ll get a health-care bill. A castrated, eviscerated, anemic, denatured, devolved shadow of what progressives have been seeking for the better part of a century—a pyrrhic victory for the Obama Administration.
There are many steps yet to be taken: a series of cloture votes in the senate to prevent filibustering before passage, followed by weeks if not months of wrangling between house and senate members to reconcile the vastly different versions passed by each.

The last rites will be performed over the public option in that conference committee. I predicted …

Obama’s Crafts the Oslo Speech
With popularity numbers falling down around his ankles…and with late night satirists making fun of his winning the Nobel after only a few months in office…Obama had had his two most important operatives concentrate on what he would say in Oslo. He called in his closest operatives from The Squid– his ace media strategist, David Axelrod and his ace opportunist, Rahm Emanuel.

Axelrod whom I have known for 30 years is not a speech-writer per se but an image-maker. Emanuel I’ve known for 20 years and is …

The waiting is finally over for some of the District of Columbia’s most ambitious school children and their parents. Democrats in Congress voted to kill the District’s Opportunity Scholarship Program, which provides 1,700 disadvantaged kids with vouchers worth up to $7,500 per year to attend a private school.
Senator Dick Durbin, who heads the subcommittee that oversees funding, has been saying for the better part of a year that he’s open to supporting the program’s continuation if certain conditions were met. In retrospect, this looks like bad faith.

Earlier this year, Mr. …
